BeKindBeYouLoveJesusAs you may remember, I have the honor of being on the Launch Team for Jen Hatmaker’s new book For the Love. (Click on the red words, if this is your first visit or you don’t remember what the heck a launch team is.) The book’s official release date is next week on August 18th. Several blogging friends from the Launch Team have been linking up on Fridays with a list of 5 favorite things.

This week’s topic: Our Five Favorite For the Love Quotes.

There is just one little problem: I am finding it extremely difficult to narrow down my favorite quotes to only 5. I LOVED this book and my advance copy is prodigiously marked up with underlines, exclamation marks, smiley faces and giant stars. In certain chapters, I circled whole paragraphs. After taking out all the laugh-out-loud funny quotes that are better read in the context of the whole hilarious chapter, I whittled the list to 17 quotes. Is that close?

Ok, I have tried to restrain myself and play by the rules.  I have reluctantly narrowed my list down to 10. 10 is divisible by 5, so I’m pretty sure that counts. 🙂 Also, if I were to do this exercise tomorrow, I would probably have 5 different quotes, so you should probably just go buy the book.

In no particular order, my 5-ish Favorite Quotes from For the Love: Fighting for Grace in a World of Impossible Standards:

On Balance: “We need to quit trying to be awesome and instead be wise.”

On Theology: “If it isn’t true for a poor single Christian mom in Haiti, it isn’t true.”

On Letting Ourselves and Everyone Else Off the Hook: “Folks who thrive in God’s grace give grace easily, but the self-critical person become others-critical. We “love” people the way we “love” ourselves, and if we are not good enough, then no one is.”

On Christians: “Honestly, I love Jesus but sometimes His followers give me a migraine.”

On the Church: “Church is a teeny bit crazy. I know this. I am this. Approximately four of you don’t have church baggage. These wounds range from “This feels irrelevant and weird” to “This place crushed my soul.” I’ve experienced both, so I promise to be a gentle friend.”

On Parenting: “We use smoke and mirrors while we figure it out behind closed doors. Plus, sometimes we are cranky and tired of parenting and just want to go to our own mom’s house and take a nap.”

On Marriage: “Sure, I planned on being a Darling Lamb Wife, but I accidentally got a fiery personality and forgot to be darling.”

On Our Kids Leaving the Church: “Humility attracts the next generation as easily as arrogance alienates them.”

On Telling the Truth: “When I present a fabricated version of myself- the self who knows all, is ever certain, always steps strong- we all lose because I cannot keep up with that lie and neither can you…If we could believe we are deeply connected in the fragile places, we could drop the games.”

On Finding Our Calling: “How many trot out the tired cliché—“I’m waiting for God to open a door” – and He is all “I love you, but get going, Pumpkin,” because usually chasing the dream in your heart looks surprisingly like work.”
